This week for our Up Closet & Personal, the beautiful Phylicia Jackson. Phylicia opened her charming West Hollywood apartment to us where we got to take a tour through her space. Originally from Las Vegas, Phylicia moved to Los Angeles to pursue modeling and acting. She has the cutest Frenchies, Frances (the fawn) and Dexter (the spotted brindle). She may have a glamorous job and reside in the center of Hollywood madness but this girl enjoys the simple quiet things in life and the comforts of home.
1. In what do you feel most glamorous?
I absolutely looooove a long flowy dress or skirt. I love the way it sways as I walk or if it happens to be breezy… I think it adds a bit of mystery and romance. Fancy little underthings are also a must for glamorous occasions. They’re like a fun little secret for yourself, and maybe your boyfriend.
2. Tell me your make up routine when you like to glam up?
I hardly ever slap on the face paint because I have to wear so much on the job that I actually hate the feeling of make-up on my skin, but when I do, I still keep it as simple as possible. I moisturize then brush on a light amount of powder. I then apply a rosy or peachy blush on the apples of my cheeks, nose and brow bone. For the eyes, I apply a thick liner, and shimmer shadow that matches what I’m wearing and a little mascara. Thanks to my contract with Latisse, my lashes grow out of control and I love it! For my lips I like a good matte lipstick but only a slightly tinted gloss is necessary if the eye make-up is bold.
3. As a child what candy bar would you kill for?
That’s funny you ask because at the ripe age of 5 years old I committed my first shoplifting offense at a 7-11 because I wanted some Starbursts so badly and my Dad wouldn’t allow it. I was caught by the clerk because it was hilarious. My dad laughed and then gave me a stern talking to and I’ve been a good girl since. Ha!
4. What food would you never try?
I’m a big time foodie so there’s much I wouldn’t try but for ethical reasons I would absolutely never try dog. I know it’s a menu item in some countries and I actually have friends that have tried it but I love dogs way too much. To me, it would be equivalent to eating human. No thanks.
5. What do you like most about LA?
I love that it’s the land of opportunity. You can literally (as I have many times) wake up in the morning with an idea and then put it in motion and make it a reality. No matter what your profession. It’s amazing!
6. How do you like to spend your free time?
Well, lately a lot of time is spent with my boyfriend and dogs. We usually just hang at the house and watch movie after movie because he is baffled by all the classics I’ve skipped out on. But when we get out of the house it’s usually to check out a new restaurant, or… I don’t know, drive across America! We do a lot of fun trips because he is new to the states. When I’m not with him I’m usually with my close girlfriends and sisters having disco dance parties in the living room, causing a ruckus.
7. Favorite quote.
“Never retract, never explain, never apologize – get the thing done and let them howl.” Nellie McClung.
That quote has inspired me since the day I read it because you really have to have a lot of confidence in everything you create. And it’s important to remember it’s yours, you made it and if you love it who cares what anybody else says or thinks. Let them howl!
8. What beauty products do you use?
I have pretty delicate skin as most people do so I don’t use anything scented on my face. I actually don’t even use soap to wash my face. Just warm water then a toner at night. In the morning I apply a dab of my favorite ultra thick moisturizer. I only use Caudalie products because they agree with my skin. I have almost their whole product line, expensive but very worth it. I never break out anymore. As far as my body, I use this awesome walnut shell dry scrub from Soapology NYC once a week to exfoliate and I go through body lotion like no other. I have major dry skin phobia.
9. What times in your closet can’t you live without.
I have a large collection of sweaters and cardigans because I’m a creature of comfort. Also, because it gets chilly every so often in LA no matter the season, I can wear them all year round. I’ve also become obsessed with all of my platform wedges and heels. I can walk in them all day comfortably and the extra height makes me feel super human. Not to mention, it’s nice to be almost eye level with my 6’4″ boyfriend once in a while.
10. Coffee or tea?
Tea. All the way. I’m too sensitive to caffeine to be a coffee drinker. I collect all kinds of teas as well. I love finding a good loose leaf tea shop when I travel. It’s the best souvenir to bring home and share with friends at the house.
11. What’s your family life like?
We’re a very close knit bunch. I have three amazing sisters, Sheena, Whitney and Chelsea. We’re all very similar in looks but completely different personalities. Sheena is the eldest but would say the most innocent. She’s always been real and surrounds herself with good people. Whitney and I are only 13 months apart so she’s always been my partner in crime, her being the most daring and adventurous one. She’s very good at being good at everything she tries… except cooking, that’s my skill. Chelsea, the youngest, is very wise and carries herself very well. I know she is on her way to being extremely successful because she is extremely driven. Our parent’s drive us crazy but we love them and they’ve always kept us close with our large extended family across America which is very important to me.
12. Where were you born? What brought you to LA?
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s a very interesting city to grow up in for sure but it’s not as wild and crazy as people may think. We lived a semi-normal suburban life actually. I still go back quite often to see family but LA has been my home for almost 10 years now. I came out here to do modeling full time but have been lucky to get some acting and tv commercial work as well. Plus, I always have new creative projects in the works… my online shop Jacksonattic.com, writing, food blogging… I can’t sit still for too long.
